Along with sunlight, artificial lighting provided by lamps, chandeliers or candles plays a great role in Feng Shui because it activates and improves energy.

Historically, light has played a crucial role in the lives of people, animals and plants. It is the source of life for plants and the source of food for animals and people. Therefore, light given by lamps or chandeliers, as well as fire of candles, is an important element of a good Feng Shui design.

Natural Light in Feng Shui

Light, and especially natural one, is an important aspect in creating a positive atmosphere in the house. It stimulates Chi, making it flow faster, thus fastening the flow of positive events in your life. The greatest effect light has in the southern part of the house, where the element of fire rules. It’s also a good idea to add more light to the north-east (earth element) of the home.

The natural quality of light is dispersing darkness, giving energy, joy and life. That is why a good Feng Shui place should be well-lit. The windows should be large enough for the daylight to get in and fill the space with the vital energy. Also, windows of the dwelling should be always clean. Being the greatest source of Chi, sunlight improves the overall atmosphere of the home and raises mood: just like in sunny weather, we feel better in sunny and well-lit premises.

Feng Shui Lighting – Lamps, Chandeliers, Candles

If the windows of the house are not large enough, large mirrors or lamps can help to make the rooms lighter and more spacious. Of course, nothing can replace natural sunlight: electric lighting, though is a substitute of natural one, is less effective than natural daylight. Nevertheless, the more light there is in the house or apartment, the healthier and friendlier the family will be.

Therefore, Feng Shui recommends having lamps and chandeliers in each room for them, being symbolical representations of the sun, to activate and energize the space. Candles, at the same time, have an even stronger effect: a lit candle not only improves the Chi of the premise, but also burns negative energy.

As for the fluorescent light, it is considered to have a negative influence on people’s health.

However, if bright light causes annoyance or irritation, it’s never prohibited to hide oneself behind the curtains. In such cases the main rule is that nothing in the house should bring discomfort. It relates to light too. So, if you prefer living in a not so bright atmosphere, do it without any doubts. Furthermore, semidarkness in not such a bad thing for a bedroom or other rooms that are purposed for rest and relaxation.
